Mongaku Valley 2022, tochi 13% *on request*
Ref : NISMOVA1
Mongaku Valley Winery is a family-run winery, founded by Mr. Shigeki Kihara in 2012.
Estate is located on a hill 130 meters above sea level, overlooking ocean and mountains, about 5 km from Ishikari Bay.
Estate grows 7 different grape varieties in its own vineyard (2.2 ha): Chardonnay / Pinot Noir / Pinotage / Pinot Gris / Sauvignon Blanc / Pinot Blanc / Gewurztraminer.
In 2022, the start of the year was busier because snow melted late into the spring, when Domaine began pruning. Then, despite the late melting of the snow, flowering took place a little earlier, and the increase in sugar content towards beginning of autumn was gradual, so that harvest schedule was not the same as usual either. The season offered grapes of good quality and volume.
“Mongaku Valley” blending series, born of the Yoichi terroir, offers a dry, co-fermented wine. Based on pleasant, expansive acidity, it is delicate with a slight tannic feel from the black grapes, giving it body and a three-dimensional feel. One of its main characteristics is its ease of drinking. The complex, unified aroma, unique to field blend wine, pairs well with dishes that can bring out a complex, multi-layered flavor using a variety of ingredients such as Dashi, herbs and spices.
This wine color is a pale golden yellow with a transparent reddish tinge. Aroma is delicate, with notes of apricot, mirabelle plum, yellow plum, citrus, honey, pear compote, lychee compote, nuts, herbs, wood and smoke. On the palate, it's both delicate and complex, with a pleasant bitterness from black grape, Umami like Dashi (broth), spice, saltiness and acidity. It's a dry, medium-bodied wine with a lingering aftertaste. Best enjoyed at a slightly higher temperature, with a larger wine glass.
This wine is ideal with :
- seafood such as scallops, shrimp and oysters
- White meats
- Goat's cheese
- a variety of complex dishes composed of fascinating ingredients with sweet taste of a sauce or Dashi
- bitter ingredients such as (wild) vegetables, fish and pork liver.
- herbs and aromatic plants that bring out the potential of ingredients such as garlic.
- Umami plants such as tomatoes and mushrooms.
- spicy olive oil, mineral-rich rock salt, fermented seasonings such as soy sauce.

THE STORY
In 2011, Shigeki Kihara, owner of Mongaku Valley Winery, moved from Tokyo to Yoichi, Hokkaido, with his family, eager to practice recycling-oriented agriculture where man and nature coexist. They acquired an 11-hectare plot of land that originally belonged to a whisky company. It was a total wasteland, abandoned for 15 years
. It took a whole year to turn it into a decent growing area. Finally, in 2012, they began planting 1,500 grape seedlings. For three years, after their first harvest in 2015, he studied with Bruce Gutlove of “10R Winery”, a custom pressing winery, and learned about growing and winemaking, before opening Mongaku Vally Winery in 2018. Just as every wine has its own personality, every tree has its own.
In keeping with the Japanese tradition of naming places and people after trees and other natural objects, he named his wines after “trees”. The wine label is based on a drawing by his daughter, depicting the world of a Japanese storybook entitled “The Tree of Courage”.
