What should ramen be served in and with what cutlery?
Ramen is served very hot in a large, wide bowl, which allows it to cool quickly. To prepare ramen, the noodles are placed in the bowl first, followed by the various toppings and then the hot broth. It's important to eat them quickly, as the noodles continue to cook in the broth. Use chopsticks to suck up the noodles, then drink the broth straight from the bowl, like a soup. There's no need to finish the broth. Using a spoon will make it easier to enjoy the broth.
What are the origins of ramen?
These wheat noodles, originally from China, first appeared in Japan at the beginning of the 20th century. Traditionally served in broths flavoured with soy sauce or miso, they gained in popularity with the arrival of instant noodles.
Ramen soup is one of the most popular dishes in Japan, and comes in a multitude of variations. The main ingredient is a tasty broth, to which ramen noodles are added, along with various ingredients such as meat (in the case of the tasty chicken ramen), vegetables and even fish. Although it's perfectly possible to make your own ramen soup, there are also dehydrated versions of ramen ready in just a few minutes so you can prepare your ramen quickly.
There are different types of noodle in Japan: somen noodles, udon noodles and soba noodles.
