The Matcha Bowl: Essential for a Successful Matcha Tea
The chawan (茶碗), also known as the matcha bowl, is a central utensil in the Japanese tea ceremony. Specially designed for preparing matcha tea, this traditional Japanese bowl stands out for its flared shape, ideal for whisking the tea with a chasen, the bamboo whisk used in the art of matcha.
What is a chawan?
A chawan is a traditional Japanese bowl used to prepare and enjoy matcha tea. Its cylindrical shape, with a wide diameter and appropriate depth, allows efficient mixing of the matcha without splashing. More than just a container, the chawan plays a key role in the sensory experience of matcha: it enhances the aromas, texture, warmth, and even the color of the tea.
What materials are used for a matcha bowl?
The choice of material affects the grip, heat insulation, and aesthetic of the bowl. Here are the most common options:
Ceramic bowl
This is the most commonly used material for chawans. Japanese ceramic, known for being robust and durable, allows great artistic freedom: varied shapes, textures, glazes, and traditional patterns.
Porcelain bowl
More refined and lighter, the porcelain chawan appeals with its delicacy and translucence. It offers a smooth texture and understated elegance.
Which bowl to use for matcha?
Avoid using ramen, miso soup, or rice bowls — these are not suitable for matcha preparation. Choose a chawan specifically designed for this purpose, with:
- A wide diameter for easy whisking without spilling;
- A stable base and good balance in hand;
- A design that matches your preferences, whether simple or artistic.
- A chawan is generally larger than a regular bowl. This allows for vigorous whisking without splashing and helps achieve a fine, even foam. The bowl is held with both hands, promoting a meditative and sensory approach to the tea ritual.
Why use a matcha bowl?
Beyond its practical function, the chawan is part of the Japanese art of living: it stimulates sight, touch, and smell. The quality of the bowl directly influences the matcha tasting experience and the pleasure of the ritual. Additionally, the thick walls of the chawan naturally regulate water temperature, preventing the delicate green tea powder from being burned.
Our chawans are made in Japan, with respect for tradition.
