Flat sakazuki sake cup

Cups used for drinking sake are usually small cylindrical containers called o-choko or choko or sakazuki of flatter shapes such as wide mouth bowls.

The smaller the cup, the more often you can serve, showing your honor and reverence every time the glasses are emptied. This is the main reason why traditional sake cups are so small, to allow this ritual to take place as much as possible when drinking with friends.

When you pour the sake into your mouth, it flows gently over your tongue and spreads to the back and both ends of your tongue, taking on the taste of the whole sake.
