Hishaku is therefore a bamboo ladle used to measure and transfer water during a temae (the tea preparation procedure is known as temae, and this is a series of important gestures that chado students practice over and over again).

Today, the temae hishaku come in four different styles: ro (foyer/cold season), furo (brasero/hot season), kennyo (all seasons) and sashi-toshi (passage).

The ro hishaku have a larger cut and their handle is cut in bias upwards.

The furo hishaku have smaller cuts and their thinner sleeve is cut in a downward bias. The kennyo hishaku have a cut that lies approximately between the furo and ro styles, with a straight cut handle.

These three types are all of the tsuki-gata type: they are made from two pieces of bamboo that are simply held together by friction. The sashi-toshi hishaku, on the other hand, are made in such a way that the sleeve passes through the cup and is fixed with a pin, making these hishaku much more durable.

It is thought that this is the original style of hishaku and, as such, they are mainly used for more formal temae. The SASHI-TOHSHI version makes no distinction between the bramero and the furnace. The symbolism of the hishaku: The way the water is poured into the kettle, the temperature of the water and the way the lid is placed on the pot all have special meaning and are carefully chosen to match the occasion and ceremony.

1. Preparation: Before first use: rinse the hishaku with hot water and let it dry completely. Cleaning: Hishaku is only used for water and does not require much cleaning. Always make sure it is completely dry before storing it. Storage: Store it in a well ventilated area with a moisture level above 50%.

2. Using hishaku: Remove water: lift the hishaku and gently remove water from mizusashi. Pour into the kettle: pour the water into the kama (tea kettle).

3. Instructions for use: Do not soak: never let hishaku soak in water. No dishwashing fluid: Avoid using dishwashing fluid, a dishwasher, or a dryer for hishaku. Dry completely: make sure it is completely dry before storing.

Storage: Place it in a well ventilated and moist place.
