Turtle's common name is Zeni turtle, which comes from the fact that shape of its shell resembles a koban (an ancient Japanese coin). This animal is the subject of numerous legends, the most famous of which dates back to Nihon-Shoki, a very ancient work on the origins of Japan and the dynasty.
Legend of Urashima Taro tells the story of a man who saves a baby turtle. To thank him, the baby's mother invites him into her water kingdom. In this case, the amulet contains a fragment of gold leaf believed to ward off evil.
