Ref : NISPCO23
Turtles have long been known for their longevity and ability to lay many eggs. They are also said to “give birth to money”. As turtles are long-lived, they are considered a symbol of longevity and good luck.
Turtle's common name is Zeni turtle, which comes from the fact that shape of its shell resembles a koban (an ancient Japanese coin). As well as being a symbol of longevity and good fortune in Japan, turtle is also associated with good old Earth. This animal is the subject of numerous legends, the most famous of which dates back to Nihon-Shoki, a very ancient work on the origins of Japan and the dynasty.
Legend of Urashima Taro tells the story of a man who saves a baby turtle. To thank him, the baby's mother invites him into her water kingdom. In this case, the amulet contains a fragment of gold leaf believed to ward off evil.
Many Japanese carry this type of amulet in their wallet or purse as an invitation to good fortune.
Japan has a rich culture of engimono or traditional lucky charms. "Engi" means luck and "mono" means thing or piece. These lucky charms popularity is closely linked to the Buddhist and Shinto religions, which place great emphasis on sacred amulets and superstition.
Japanese literature and poetry frequently feature animals, plants and objects that can bring good or bad luck. OSAIFUNI "for Your Wallet" series is made of clear glass and molded with auspicious motifs.
